Hi All,
What kind of salaries do fresh Software Quality Engineers typically command in the USA (as well as India)?
What is your opinion about Testing/QA jobs?
Some people I've spoken to feel that Testing/QA jobs are inferior to development/programming jobs.

I'd like the experienced folks out here to throw some light on this.

Thanks..appreciate your help,
Amit

no job is inferior. it is upto ur interest whether u want to do development or QA. I think salaries should be pretty much comparable.

sonya is right ..no job is inferior .. depends on your interest .. i used to be a developer 2 yrs back .. then moved to QA since i was interested in performance and integration testing .
The salaries are comparable ..depends on how skilled you are ..from my experience interviewing testers ..its bloody difficult to find a good one.

I'm not sure. There is something of a social distinction in many places for reasons which make absolutely no sense to me. I once gave a job as assistant designer to a bright young woman who had been pigeonholed in testing. She practically kissed my feet. I don't know why - she could do the job and we got along. Why not?

Once you are ID'ed as a tester it can be blamed hard to get out. Hard enough for men, almost impossible for women. This was a decade ago so perhaps it's changed. I hope so.

So while I did a lot of testing I refuse to say tester on my CV. I don't mention the test plans I wrote as part of my exaustive unit tests. I don't mention my Perl for the same reason. Someone might get the idea I do Perl for anything other than advanced shell-hacking.......

The only thing that scares me is getting into Testing/QA and then finding out that this is not what I wanted to do. ANd then, realizing that its impossible to move over to development or something. I just out of university with a MS-CS and have no previous experience. So thats my dilemma !

I have been in QA for 7 years and have worked on number of projects. Its amazing the kind of width you can have on projects. On one hand there could be mundane tasks of executing manual test cases and on the other you could be testing the performance of your companies application and provide suggestions and guidance. It all depends on how you percieve it.

I started off by writing test cases and am now an expert in performance testing.

Its been a very rewarding experiance and I plan to stick to it.you will not believe the number of performance testers I interview who know nothing about performance or automated testing.

Impt. There is a difference in the way testing is done in Indian outsourcing companies and Indian/US Product companies....so better find out the difference and then decide.

Yup, QA practices widely vary across companies. There are companies where all that the QA team does is click thru a web application and see that nuthing breaks on the surface of it. But they dont know anything abt the internals as to what data gets stored or updated. They dont worry abt automation, regression etc. But again, this is not specific to QA. Development teams also have widely varying practices across companies. If possible, if u know somebody within the company, try to find out how they operate.
