is it possible to create a custom tag that can validate a text field during its onSubmit event?

the custom tag will just render a span tag and will dynamically display an error messages.

For example. if the user typed A, it will display Apples
if the user typed B, it will display Banana, etc

help !!

JSP is a server side technology.

What you're trying to do involves client side coding.

Yes, remeber that all JSP does for you is to allow you to dynamically create an HTML page to send to the client. From the borwser point of view it's just an HTML page. So any client-side activity must take place in the browser using Javascript. Reading this article might be helpful.
