People are saying two different practices with regard to the portability of the U.S. security clearance:
1. Some people say that only Department of Defense (DoD) clearance can be transferred to other Departments; such as the State Department, Department of Justice, Custom, etc. But, the clearance obtained under those Departments cannot be transferred to DoD.
2. Some people say that changes have been made sine 9/11. The clearance is portable among all Departments.
Does anybody know the correct answer to the portability question? Or, where I can find the correct answer? Thank you very much.
Accepting existing scurity clearances is a decision of each organization. Some are much stricter than others.
If it won't jeopardize your job, ask your security officer to contact his/her opposite number in the organization where you want to go. Otherwise, you can start the application process and the new org will tell you at some point.
