What does precompiling a jsp page mean ? under what circumstances do we use it?

It means that the jsp is ready to go when the first request for it is made. All JSPs need to be translated into a .java file (usually made into a Servlet), then compiled into a .class file. At this point it is ready to run in your web container. None of this is done until you try to run a JSP unless you pre-compile. The it is translated and compiled before the first request is made
