As Ben said, most tutorials on the web are outdated. Anything that uses scriptlets should be considered quaint antiques at this point.
Most books will also cover all of JSP, so even though you shouldn't be using scriplets anymore, books will cover it because it's still part of JSP.

Indeed. But I haven't given up yet. I just need to figure out to distinguish the book I want to write from "just another JSP book". The one I have in mind would focus exclusively on using good web app structure and the JSP 2.0 features (no scriptlets!) to write modern web applications.
This is too bad because JSP 2.0 really (in my opinion) got it right.
Indeed, again. There are a lot of people who have a bad taste in their mouths with regard to JSP, and that's because of the pre-2.0 madness of scriptlets. Things have changed.
