JSP, unlike PHP, Perl, ASP, etc, isn't a scripting language.
Because JSPs are converted to servlets and compiled, they have the benefit of being pure Java. This means that the entire Java API is available to the JSP/servlet developer. It also means that they, like any other compiled Java objects can benefit from run time optimizations and Just In Time (JIT) compilation from the HotSpot run time environment.
