Salary formula in Mumbai

I have posted questions related to this before and what seems to be the norm in Mumbai for salary is (n+1)lakhs p.a. where n is the no of yrs of experience.
Now, lets consider some decent companies in Mumbai.
Is (n+1) the minimum salary that a professional should expect in these companies?
Is anything less than (n+1) considered to be a low pay in Mumbai?

If professional is descent then I don't think (n+1) should be a problem.Mumbai(Bombay),you must be knowing is one of the costliest and dirtiest city in India.Transportation is easy but somewhat expensive.Its population is little less than entire population of Australia.Natually living in Mumbai on rent is as costly as here in Bangalore.Little outside of subbarbs,beyond Dahisar,you get cheap rent.Food again is expensive.Travelling through jammed packed local trains in the morning is a thrilling experience.Most of Software shops are located in/around Andheri area where 1BHK costs around Rs 5000 per month.One can also go to Vashi/CBD Belapur as many companies like LTITL/Patni are there too.If you have already possess a house/apartment in Mumbai,then n+1 lakhs should not be a problem.Cost on rent and food are saved.

Arjun, I think u misunderstood my question. My question was not whether (n+1) is sufficient to survive in Mumbai. Lets forget abt living conditions in Mumbai. My question in more with respect to industry standards in Mumbai. What I want to know is that when I negotiate compensation with a company in Mumbai (assuming I am a decent professional), should i consider (n+1) to be the minimum pay I should get, and should I consider anything lower than (n+1) to be a poor pay. Or is (n+1) the max that a professional can get, barring exceptional cases.

I am really surprised to hear that. I have close to 9 yrs of experience, so lets take 9 as an example. Assuming that I am a decent professional, are you saying that I should negotiate for 13.5 to 18 lakhs per annum in Mumbai. I think what u guys are saying is the formula for Bangalore, Hyderabad.

Please correct me if I am wrong. Curious to know if you work in Mumbai. Also, if I am wrong, can you please tell me which are the companies in Mumbai where I can negotiate that kind of pay.

Not sure about salary in Mumbai.

Also depends on what kind of companies are you looking at and what is your profile.

Not suprised abt that. I think Delhi, Noida, Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad all pay much better than Mumbai.

Not sure about salary in Mumbai.

Does the EMC2 formula imply that every year one should expect a raise of 1.5L ... ?
A standard survey done by Hewitt Associates in Mumbai shows the raise percentage varies from 8-17% annually...!!!

Job-jumping then should be the key to get the 1.5-2.0*n figure....
