I think it's fine. I've been seeing plnty of jobs there. Check out Craig's List.

It should be allright for J2EE developers who can be productive(according to feedback from some friends working in NYC).

If you endup in a wall street firm, the bonus can be good aswell(in decent years for the specific firm).

Job market in NYC for J2EE is very good. Financial giants like Goldman Sachs are recruiting left right and center.

Anyody having 3-4 years experience can easily land a job in the city, no problem.
