that with new MNC product companies like BEA, WebMethods opening their offshore centers in India, how much sense does it make for a person with 7 years of experience to join as Individual Contributor(not leading a team)? Considering the fact that they pay well, bear good brand name but are against the conventional Indian companies where a guy with similar experience could be a Project Manager.
Now days not everyone will get Project Manager postion with 7 years of experience. But there are few people who will get. With that exp you can expect Project Lead postion, some times you cant even get. By designation you may be Project Leader but role wise you will sernior developer. Its happening with many companies. Now days most of Indian companies have scarecity of senior developers(with 4 to 8 yrs exp). The companies could able to get Junior Developers and Project Managers but not Senior Developers. Morever there is lot of attrition rate in Senior Developers.
But if you are interested in project management and if you have project management skills definitely you can demand for Project Manager postion. In previous company my Project Manager came to that postion with 6+ years of experience, and he used to be very good Project Manager.
Its all depends on your area of interest and where you want to stand in future. If you want to go technical side its not a problem being individual contributor. But if you want to move people management definitely its not right option.
