Hello all. I am coming up on a Java/JSP project in the future. In .NET, there is a built in way of handling membership. Does Java/JSP have a way pre-built way of handling membership or is this is something that has to be built from scratch?

What do you mean by "membership"? It's not a term that's commonly used in the Java web app world.

You know how you have membership based sites that require you to register before you can have access to premium features of the site? We are looking to do the same for a future website, but the technology being used will be JSP. Back in the day, I used to work with classic ASP and PHP and those two technologies required that I created my own membership management scheme. In the .NET world, ASP.NET owns a built-in membership provider or you can build your own. I was wondering if Java/JSP offered the same or is it something that needs to be built from the ground up.

In my view it looks like access restrictions to pages with different roles. Am I getting it wrong?

Yes, the servlet/JSP API supports this. Some (or all) pages can be declared to have restricted access, meaning that a user needs to log in before he can access them (generally by providing a username and a password). A concept of "roles", i.e. different users having different levels of access, is also supported.
