The JDBC-ODBC Driver is commonly used because it can be used with data source that supports ODBC. And that is almost everything from Oracle to an Excel spreadsheet. In addition it comes from Sun for free with the JDK. The disadvantage is the ODBC by itself is slow and your adding an additional layer (the JDBC layer) on top of that. And of course the client must have ODBC installed.
