I often read about the BIG guys like WebLogic, iPlanet ect. but is there anyone using open source JBoss or Jonas or perhaps smaler commercial players like Orion? How do these EJB servers compare to the big ones in terms of stability, clustering, scalability and speed?

Orion is quite stable, so is Resin.
The main reasons these guys are small are their age and pricetag. This software is often selected mainly on price (the 'if it is expensive, it must be good' syndrome) and size of releasing company ('if it is big, I can sue it for a lot if it does not work').
