I worked in Singapore for 4 and half years.
No doubt 3000 is reasonably a very good salary for a person
with 1.5 years of experience.

Hey Anil,

My situation is similar to urs ..
I joined Kanbay as a fresher 18 months ago, now started looking for jobs outside India.
If u dont mind, can u tell me where u got the offer and how u applied..?
Heard Singapore is a good place to work, and 3000 is good for that..
My sincere advice is 'Go for IT' , if u dont have better options..

Did you pay anything for the consultancy to get this chance?. Or do usually people (Job seekers) pay any amount for consultancies?

Mani,

No need to pay anything to the consultancy. But, you may have to bear the travel expenses.

There are two types of consultancies in Singapore.

1. Who hires only if you are in singapore. The trend is to come to singapore on your own exprenses on a SVP (social visit pass) and apply for such consultancies during your stay here. You are the one who pays for the travel expenses.
2. Who hires from other countries directly. Such companies will take care of your (possibly for your entire family) travel expenses too.

Cheers

Singapore is a very developed nation. It has a strong economy.

It has a good wave that you can ride along with; like until your retirement.

Remember a few years ago when Asian currencies crashed against the US$? The sg$ resisted the negative effects.

Ankit,

There is no hard and first rule for the salary and number of years of experience.
All depends on what kind of ROLE you are playing and how better you can demand at the time of salary negotiations.
EP process is generally done by the employer. It takes around 15-20 days.

What I could get from all your response is It is advisable to work in Singapore only at the start of ur Career(1-2.5) years..After that it is better to stay in India since the pay and the growth will be better in India...Moreover I read in a thread that a Singaporean employer called the potential employee an asshole..(I would have slapped him if I were in his position)..Do you need to work there losing your self respect..?

Ishan,

If you are looking for a position for development overseas, Career is definitely a luxury. I found money to be main motive to move overseas.

Singapore is not that bad like that a** hole thread.

How about mainframe developer? Any comments? I am due to negotiate my next 12 months salary on Monday. I have around 8 years of mainframe development experience(Usa, Philippines, Singapore).

How much should I keep in mind as my target salary, during the negotiation?

I have heard that singapore is a very costly place, since it is a famous tourist place. if you are single it is ok but for those who are married and want to take their spouse there, wont be able to make much savings unless both of you work.

If you are planning to go back to your home country, I think that is a big consideration. If you are planning to stay here for good, and both parents are working, then even the costly children education expenses should be manageable.

That is not always the case. Sometimes, the wife or husband is unable to get a decent job. So only 1 head of the family is working. In any place you go, it is always better if 2 heads are contributing that 1.

I know one who decided to go back to his home country due to these considerations.

The offer is significantly lower... If you try in any of the banks present in singapore you can start easily from atleast 75K + SGD depending on how your interviews go and your skill set... I am saying 'atleast' coz the banks have a wide range for a persons skill sets.. When I had an offer 2 odd years back it was for 95k SGD + separate bonus (I had 4.5 years of exp at that time) but then I was keen on returning to India from NY... So if you are interested in pay - banks do pay well as long as you dont mind stretching few times a week and adjust to a bit hectic lifestyle... it all depends on what you want in terms of exposure and experience...

It all depends on various factors like your technology skills, education, related work experience... I would say its on the lower side for 4.8 years of experience... Probably you could check various sites that list pays by googling

Thanks for the information Shiva... I really appreciate it...

But you know even if i ask 3.3K or 3.5K, consultants say they cannot as its budget problem, the salary will be decided before forwarding resume to client... so i dont think the factors you mentioned are valid in all the cases like contract basis...

Can anyone please help me on interview preparation for my experience... ?? i have no idea as here where ever i go they ask technical questions for developer position... probably because of this i must be getting lower salary...

Java J2ee interview companion by Arulkumaran is an excellent book. Just search for the same in 'Jobs discussion' forum here & you will get enough feedback about it & from where to get.

Well well!
I got an offer from XYZ company 3 months ago! It was around 5000 SGD, but was kind of pure maintenance job! I am having around 7+ exp in Java/J2EE! By looking all options, I preferred an US MNC at Mumbai!

Well, it was a Pune based "Indian MNC" (with branches all across the world).

I can't open up the name ethically

Well, try looking up job sites, you will find some or other company for sure!

Best of Luck!
