SAP and Java

Hi,
Iam 2+ years of experienced person on Java/J2EE technologies. Recently I came to know that I could opt for SAP (ABAP) training, provided by the company.
I want to know is there any link between Java(especially J2EE) and SAP. Would getting trained in ABAP programming boost my career or would it result in losing the present skill-set and migrating to other technologies?? Plz giude me.

I don't know about ABAP, but I've seen some desperate US job postings for SAP/R3.

I think its not a bad idea learning SAP. If you know java or any other programming language ABAP is easier for you. The link between Java and SAP is : SAP modules are developed in Java(especially the GUI part). The SAP consultants are getting very good salaries.

I have seen many of H1-Bs who go now from India are not C/UNIX programmer but SAP functional consultants/ABAP programmers.

Since SAP is a vast field with more than 100 Functional modules, the question is what to learn? I think there is also Technical side of SAP like ABAP and some other things which I really do not know...

As a Java guy for me It makes sence to be on the Tech side of SAP..

If some one has gone through this path, I request them to kindly give advice.
Also let me know any Good SAP institutes in Hyderabad/India.

ABAP is the starting place where you can start. There are lot of modules(BW, MM, SD) which may require some functional experience to understand betterway. For ex SD module requires some Sales and Distribution experience. When you dont have funcation experience and want to enter in SAP go with ABAP, then based on demand and interest you can jump into other modules like BW which is hot now a days.

In Hyderabad Siemens is the best and I guess it will charge you more.

Is there any alternative to Siemens in Hyderabad who charge reasonably.
I heard that the fees from Siemens are sky-rocking, this makes my interest to learn SAP difficult.
