Getting into the software engineering field

I am working towards a second bachelor's degree in Computer Science and I would like to become a software engineer. I have worked as a computer operator and a computer system analyst, but those jobs had nothing to do with computer programming or software engineering. Do you have any suggestions how I can get into the software engineering field? Do you suggest that I work as a programmer before becoming a software engineer?
