help needed!!!!!

hi all!!!
i just can"t express my feelings when now when i post this message i amfrom india and passed my batchelors in computer science in 2004 july and with lot of hard work and effort and with god"s grace i got a job in top MNC firm in bangalore and i got training in java j2ee
to b very frank i am not techinically very highly sound but i feel i can do it so now i just started to prepare for scjp and other certifications
BUT THE PROBLEM IS
right now i have been placed into a project but the job is not demanding rght we are sitting simply and browsing rather than doing any work!!!
it really make me think while me batch mates at diffrenent firms are owrking hard in their so called technologies.....
i am sitting idle!!!
shud i change my firm???
shud i try other things???
wat are ur valid suggestions
mor eover i just can"t quit here my finacial condition is not allowing me to sit with a job for some more time!!!
plz help me give me some good suggestions i know u ppl will much to suggest me!!!11

Since how long you are sitting idle? If that is long time more than 6 months then go and talk with your manager. Explain you situation. Give him some time.

Mean while try to improve your technical skills as well as other skills. Its not advisable leaving a company just within one year.

As Mr.Reddy said it is not advisable to change a company with in an year. Try talking with your Management in order to shift to other project. No amount of
passive practice can equal active participation in a live project.

Dont get worried much as 45 days is not much. Believe in my previous company I have seen lot of freshers got work only after 1 year. But ofcourse thats not so good. So talk with your manager as well as PL. Your PL and PM may take some time to give you some work suitable to your interests and skills.

One best way to develop your java skills is go for certification. Certification makes you read so you will learn by force. Go thru the existing project design, architecture, walk thru the code and try to understand. If you dont understand any thing in the project ask your seniors/PL, if you find some thing new suggest that to your PL.

Gain enough knowledge about project so that you can do work more efficiently when you have given work. Try to get some domain knowledge related your project. Some projects very difficult to understand and it may take hell lot of time to understand each and everything. Now you have free time. Utilise it.

If you think you can find other ways to utilise your time.

Yeah. getting certified will make you look pro-active to your employers too, and maybe move you up the queue of the next people to be put onto live projects.
Additionally people who walk around the office who don't know your position will see you looking busy doing technical stuff, rather than see you wasting time.

You can also study the current projects you have access to, and come up with ways of improving on something.
For example, there might be some code without any unit tests. You could offer to write unit tests for those. Once those are in place, you can offer to refactore the code, write JavaDocs. There are heaps of things you can do in any project once you start exercising your imagination.
