Hi Java Ranch Friends,

I work for small company in Bangalore which has capacity of 80 people. Since 5 months I am working here. I am paid 1,50 ,000 rupees P/A i.e. in Indian currency. I have 18 months experience in Java/J2EE and hold SCJP & SCWCD Sun Certifications.

I wanted to ask salary hike how I can approach suggestions are welcomed according this pts

1) How can I approach to ask hike.

2) I am planning to ask 3,50,000 u people may be surprised and think I am money minded. But I know I am worth that much salary and I am working for IBM in CONTRACT BASIS through my core company and I have good performance record. IBM is paying a very huge amount for my core company.

3) I am into very good project i.e. UNILEVER and like the work, the problem is that I think I am getting less salary. I dont want to change the job but I want 100% salary hike.

4) If I have offer letter in my hand for 3, 00000 lakhs. Is it advisable? To show the offer letter to HR and demand for hike in salary according to that offer letter.

5) My aim is to not to leave the company but I want to get 100% hike. How can.Plz advice to achive this

6) Can u please explain me any case or example if u have come across my situation i.e asking 120% hike within 5 months and what was the result.

Question for Human Relation managers.

1)If u were my HR and if I ask 120% hike what would be your answer. Will u get bad impression on me or would u like to think and discuss my performance. If i get only 50% hike.My aim is not to change job will i get bad impression for askin 120% hike.

2)If you were in my position how would u approach for hike in 100% salary

3)If I have Offer from other company for 3,00000 lakhs and u think I am worth that much would u do increment

I have never heard 100% salary hike.If they give you 100% hike in five months, that decision might affect other employees. If you approach for 100% hike,I think they will at the most can give not more than 40%.Additionally they might offer you other responsibilities like leadership and other perks like training, certification reimbursement etc.Its upto you to decide whether to stay or move somewhere else depending on your priority.

Always raise your salary issues during appraisals. Thats the rite time.

2) I am planning to ask 3,50,000 u people may be surprised and think I am money minded. But I know I am worth that much salary and I am working for IBM in CONTRACT BASIS through my core company and I have good performance record. IBM is paying a very huge amount for my core company.

Do you work in IBM thru consultant or any company. If you work from consultant you have chances of getting more salary. But in any situation getting 100% hike is not possible. You can expect max 40 to 50% hike.

3) I am into very good project i.e. UNILEVER and like the work, the problem is that I think I am getting less salary. I dont want to change the job but I want 100% salary hike.

If you like work try stay for some time and raise your issue during appraisal.

4) If I have offer letter in my hand for 3, 00000 lakhs. Is it advisable? To show the offer letter to HR and demand for hike in salary according to that offer letter.

I guess no use. If show offer letter HR people will give you some false promises and make you not to leave company.

5) My aim is to not to leave the company but I want to get 100% hike. How can.Plz advice to achive this

No other alternataive then leaving company.

6) Can u please explain me any case or example if u have come across my situation i.e asking 120% hike within 5 months and what was the result.

I have not seen more than 50% hikes not more than that.

I have seen 100% hike's. and this company is in top 20.

Guys who demanded that much hike are already drawing very low salaries and they have very good offers in hand.

Cheers
Suresh

If your company having policy of repaying money for certifications then you can go ahead. But I wont think they will pay you if you took certification before joining even it is one day before. But nothing wrong in trying.

Nothing wrong asking for 120% hike. But I suggest you wait for rite time. If you put rite things at rite time then you will have edge. If you put rite things at wrong time then you are looser. If your appraisals are way to go long then you can go ahead to talk with them now. But do not expect any result immediately. No company wont give hikes just for one employee in the middle of year as it creates problem them and every other employee may ask for hikes.

The rite is during performance reviews, appraisals. Talk with your manager/hr in a polished way that you are underpaid comparitive market standarads. Never never compare your salary with your coemployees. Even you can tell about other offer but it shouldnt sound as you are blackmailing them for salary.

I believe you got what you were looking for but just my two cents:

Salary negotiation is an art. If you search on the Net you will find enough articles. In short however, I would recommend NOT doing the following:
" If I have offer letter in my hand for 3, 00000 lakhs. Is it advisable? To show the offer letter to HR and demand for hike in salary according to that offer letter."

I would never do that. Firstly, talk to your immediate supervisor/manager. HR generally has no say in salary issues. When you ask for a raise, ask for the amount instead of the percentage hike. It may be the same thing but it has to be put in a polite manner.

If you want to convey to your manager that you might look elsewhere or have another offers in hand put it diplomatically by saying that the market is hot, I know my value, ... etc. That is enough of a hint. If you go around demanding and even if they give in, they will always remember that you hijacked them into giving you a pay raise. A colleague of mine did the same thing in my company by demanding a pay raise from his manager. Now the next time he does this he will never get a proper raise. Also, since the senior management knows this, if it is time to downsize he is going to be the first in the firing line.

Also, it is a misconception that raises can be given only during appraisals. This is not true. Actually what you are asking is not a raise - which is generally only 15-20% average in India. You are asking for a salary ADJUSTMENT to the current market level. This comes from a different pot of money. There is no need to wait for your appraisal. You may ask anytime. A good time would be to ask for an adjustment when your supervisor is
a: in a good mood,
b: a project you were involved in has gone particularly well,
c: after lunch.

Research has shown:
1: Avoid asking for a raise on Monday's and Friday's.

So good luck and don't give up if they say 'No' the first time. Persist. Persist. Persist. It may take months. I speak from personal experience. And in the end if they really do NOT give you the raise you are looking for then obviously they do not value you as an employee and it is time to look elsewhere.

Rashmi,

I'm sure you mean 3 lakhs & not "3, 00000 lakhs" in the following:

If I have offer letter in my hand for 3, 00000 lakhs. Is it advisable? To show the offer letter to HR and demand for hike in salary according to that offer letter."

Don't show any job offer that you may have to your current employer. However, you can always mention it outright or via a hint face-to-face.

As regards to demanding a specific amount is concerned, you can always do that but you won't get anywhere with such a demand unless you can justify that number.
  • I don't know how valuable certifications are in India at this time; but if they are & if they can be somehow quantified, that will be one factor.
  • Market value is another.
  • Peer compensation, however difficult it may be do determine that, is certainly yet another justification factor that you can use. If you do use peer compensation as a comparative figure in your discussion with you manager, don't mention names.
  • If you can also convince your manager of your worth & your contribution to the project, that will go a long way in getting you the salary you think you deserve. An immeasurable device for this will be the favorable feedback/appraisal from the client manager.

  • Will your demand this early in your job stint be counted against you further down the line? Well, that depends on:
  • [list]Your continued/continuing performance
  • The philosophy & ethics at your company and more importantly your manager. If you continue to deliver on your promises and deliver high quality work, then that will count very favorably towards your self-assurance and your self-analysis. If your manager and company have integrity they will recognize this and your value & stock within the company will rise.

  • Hope this helps.
