I am a java aspirant, having good skills in Java(jsp, jdbc, servlet, java mail and j2me) also done lot of projects in java/j2ee/j2me in my academic course (BE comuter science).I am a fresher and recently joined in a MNC. There, I have been assigned Data Warehousing project, where I need to work with oracle and other databases.

As I am much impressed by Java, I want to switch my working area to Java/j2ee. But, in my company, they refused and said switching is not possible. (Also, I have bond with this company for 1 year)

What should I do to pursue my career through Java? I decided to go for java certifications (SCJP,SCWCD). Will that be helpful for me to go for java based job? Please give your sugesstion regarding this.

If your company refused to shift you into Java projects, then you have two options:

1. Leave the company. Which is very bad option.

2. Work in the projects you have assigned and develop your java skills too in the same time. Go for certifications thats better idea. As you already claimed that you are having good knowledge in Java, try to improve your database skills too. Always you may not get chance to work in databases.

Good Luck

I love working with Java, but I wouldn't mind having to do this kind of work. There is potentially good money in it and database skills seem to always be in demand. Even when we hit bad unemployment here in the US, very few database admins or developers were laid off at most companies I knew about.

If you just absolutely insist on getting into Java then you might pursue other options, but this is by no means a bad direction to take.

You are perhaps thinking that being a Java developer is about Java coding. If so, you are wrong. Off the top of my head, I've also needed these skills:

HTML
XML
JavaScript
UML
Scripting (DOS, UNIX, Ant)
SQL
RDDMS
Web services
OO
Design (system, program)
IDE (JBuilder, NetBeans, eclipse)
Modeling tool (Rational Rose)
Networking
Testing
Analysis
Reviewing design and code
Writing specifications
Teamworking

So, I'd say that learning about database is highly relevant and will make you a better developer as every enterprise system has a database.
