when con.close is called from where is the connection dropped ? from client ? app server or db server ?

What really happens when you call "close" is determined by the driver implementation. What's important is that it adheres to the semantics defined by the JDBC specs. As a user of the JDBC driver, that's really all you need to be concerned about.
(e.g. calling "close" will have drastically different meaning for a JDBC wrapped XML file than it would for a traditional database like MySQL.)
