A survey for hiring managers / developers Administrated by the Texas State University
The Open Source Software (OSS) movement has always puzzled economists. Why would developers write software and let commercial companies free ride for
profit? Yes, some OSS developers are hired by commercial companies and some just do it for the fun. But most developers work on OSS projects on their own time; and "having fun" is not a sustainable motivation for the tedious work to maintain a successful OSS project over years.
In labor economics, a leading theory for OSS developers is that they write OSS out of "career concern": they expect the experience would beef up their resume and help them find a higher paying job later. But are developer's career expectations really hold up in the real world? Do employers really value OSS experience? To answer those questions, researchers in the Texas State University are
running a survey for employers (and developers involved in the firing process). Your input would be much appreciated.
