The difference between the two is not an efficiency issue - PreparedStatement is the interface into (potentially) cached, compiled statements with parameter binding, whereas CallableStatements are specifically provided to give an inteface to calling stored procedures - i.e. statements written and held in the DB layer. Yes, stored procdures will always make your Java application perform better - but that is only because the DB is now doing more work. And of course they are not platform independent.
