I have both 98 and xp,the oracle 8i very well got installed in 98,but didn't in xp.Does this oracle 8i only works in 98,do i have get the 9i.
In documentation it is writtten that oracle 8i personal edition for windows 98 realease notes.

According to Oracle's
MetaLink
Web site, Oracle Database - Personal Edition Version 9.2 is certified with Windows XP.
