Java is getting used in billing applications, gui development. Even it is used to develop interfaces to talk with telecom components like Network Elements. I guess it is getting used in many other areas where I dont have idea.

hi,
In telecom domain usually C is used together with unix. For handling high level information objects and for protocol implementation, like SNMP(+ MIB), java is used.

I graduated this year from telecom engg while also learning C,C++ and Unix .I got placed in a S/W MNC and they trained me in JAVA and i am supposed to develop web applications.Although i have done well till now,my heart yearns for developing telecom applications.I am bonded to this company for the next 1&1/2 years and till then i shall be basically doing web apps.I,more than many of my friends who r in telecom domain,use to take quite an interest in telecommunication subjects and I want to use them now.I know that its basically C and unix in telecom.I respect JAVA,and the company's training but if i continue working for it I fear it would be too late to enter this domain.breaking the bond is also risky.the big question is: after 1&1/2 years will i still be able to switch to telecom domain??

biswajit, it should not probelm at all. Once you complete your bond start applying telecom companies, its not a big deal for you to get into telecom domain. Dont loose your touch in C,C++ and Java which will definitely get you job in telecome domain. Also dont forget Unix, which is important.

Definitely your Java experience will be helpful. Now days many telecom applications are moving to Java whereever its possible. I am working on one of such application. So dont worry.

Nowadays most of the telecom applications are switching to Java/J2EE, mainly for portability, extensibility, etc. And to develop portal solutions, Java/JEE is mailnly used.
So dont worry , even in telecom also java is extensively used.

Thanx for all the replies..........i want to think myself as a java telecom app developer.......could somebody give me an example where java was used to develop a telecom app...i can do some r&d on that by reading books,etc(while my engg skills are still fresh) so that after 1&1/2 yrs i dont find myself like a fish out of water when i join the proper company.

To give you example one of such telecom product is Network Management System(NMS). Companies like Lucent, Cisco are using Java to develop this product. You can know more about the product in the following link:
