using apache Database Connection Pool (dbcp)
database is ms sql server
using the net.sourceforge.jtds.jdbc.Driver driver

the server certainly isn't the fastest, but it gets the job done.

With that, if I perform a loop that does a simple select count(*) on a small table (seven rows) I am finding it is executing 7 calls per second.

a stored procedure is doing thousands per second
a cold fusion app is doing around 30

Does this sound right?

A comparison to a stored proc is moot, since you don't have the network overhead and latency.
Seven calls doesn't sound like much, though. I'm not under the impression that either DBCP or jTDS are high performance libraries. Have you tried the JDBC driver available from Microsoft? It's free, and -since it supports JDBC 2- comes with its own pool implementation.
