I think you should check with new driver (latest is 3.1.11 )and then if you get the exception again , post your code + exception . the error i think come from version uncompatibility between Mysql and driver you used.

Is this a recurring exception or a one-off? If it only happened once and (for example) you only found out about it by looking at the logs I'd forget about it. If it is happeneing all the time, well that's different.
I still think it looks like a driver version problem. Is there the possibility someone placed a driver somewhere else that is getting pick up in preference (eg the jre/lib/ext directory)
