I have the O'Reilly book titled Database Programming with JDBC and Java second edition. It was published in 2000. Is this seriously outdated now, and if so, do you know of a better book I can find.

I would suggest JDBC API Tutorial and reference Third ed. from Sun. This is the best one can ask for.

Ya..Addison Wesley JDBC API Tutorial and Reference Third Edition is a very good book. You can also have a look at JDBC bible.
