Any explanation?

If the discuss (of which there was NONE last time I looked) went sour cant the moderator who decided to remove it at least have the decency to let me know why?

I can only hypothesise that various American members started debating the completely unrelated political background of the films narator rather than keeping to the topic at hand (Which generally seems to get moderators hitting the delete key faster than my code can say "NullPointerException") - but is it REALLY not possible to discuss this without resorting to blanket unwarned thread deletion?

I really did want to know whether you guys out there are happy with the quality of the science in this - Its a pretty sad day if we cant even critique 'popular science for dummies' type movies without attracting the ire of the censors!

PLEASE let me know if this thread (or any thread I've started) is going to be deleted so I have half a chance of reading any replies! (Is that too much to ask?)

Perhaps I should leave this to the moderator(s) who handled it, but there are certain topics that, for whatever reasons, just can't seem to stay civil.

In this case, the thread went bad very quickly -- even descending to religious snipes (without the help of "American members").

I don't know who deleted it, but I'm not at all surprised, and support the decision. We've been deleting political threads sooner rather than later for quite some time now. Because we got sick of the whiny arguments from people who always thought that their posts deserved to be heard, but couldn't show respect for others.

[AW]: I can only hypothesise that various American members started debating the completely unrelated political background of the films narator rather than keeping to the topic at hand

Nope. But stuff like this is one reason political threads usually get out of hand here - idiotic generalizations about other nationalities. Thanks for the demonstration.

General policy is that any thread in MD may be deleted if any moderator thinks it's going to cause trouble. It's very subjective. When things are quiet and everyone is being pleasant, we're much more likely to let potentially controversial subjects survive. When people get bitchy about it, we're more likely to trash the controversial stuff at first opportunity. We put quite a bit of effort into having more open policies in the past, and it most always ended up making more work for us, and more unhappy posters. We're primarily a Java site, and the moderators don't want to spend all their time playing referee over political discussions.

Tell ya what. You come up with a million bucks a year so we can be all be paid to do it, and we'll do this for ya. No prob!

Hell, gimmie $10,000 and I'll make sure you get a copy of every deleted thread for all time.

Which makes it *not* meaningless, and therefore off topic for the Meaningless Drivel forum, or so it seems to me...

Probably somewhere on the net. Not in MD, obviously.
