When trying to insert a record with a date object to an oracle (10) db, I get this invalid column type exception. The same code works in a db2 db. Does anyone know why?

Could be several different things. One common one is poorly written code that relies on the DB to do an implicit type conversion; different DBs have different conversion rules. Or it could be something else.

Post some code and a description of the DB columns.

Turns out the code I was using is causing this problem.
