Hi Guys : As a java developer, Im used to cross platform operation of my software. Im having alot of trouble getting mysql to work on my Mac.

It seems like the installation of Mysql on a mac is complicated... Ive tried downloading the packages and running the installation gui, and that clearly isnt enough - I cant type "mysql"or "sh mysql" at the command line, or even in the bin directory and get it to run.

When i finally found the cryptic command to run mysql, it turned out that i didnt work because it sais it cant access port 3306. I doubt this is really the problem, but it could be that i have multiple versions of mysql installed because of the several 1000s of times ive tried to get it to work on my mac.

2 questions :

1) why is MySQL so easy to run on windows, and so complex on OSX ?

2) What can i do to get MySQL up and running ?

I've not installed mySQL myself but know people who have and don't recall them having any issues.

Does it have to be MySQL? I've installed PostgreSQL without any difficulties.
