A year ago a recuiter called asking if I knew Cram. Now they are calling again. What is the future of Curam?

I have read Curam's website some. Not too helpfull, but ok.

This framework looks like it is heavily targeted towards governments since who else has "human services, health, labor, social security, and military and veterans organizations". Systems using Curam are being build now. That kinda makes me think that there will be some continual demand for knowledgable developers. But it will not get even close to anything like stuts or spring. This looks kinda niche.

So what do you think? Have any of you worked with this framework? What do you think of it? Is this an up and coming framework, or is it going to stay small? Is Cram worth learning?

Even I got the offer from Curam software Bangalore; they offered me 4.4 lakhs for just 19 months experience in java, j2ee.

I have cleared SCJP and SCWCD certifications. I am more techi person. can anybody who is working in the Curam suggest me. Is Cram worth learning?

My aim is to become architect 3 years down the line
What would be my future if I join Curam.

I am in the USA. I don't know much about Curam. Only certain kinds of organizations will use it. Namely big organizations. In the case of Curam, governments.

As I have looked at it more it is starting to look like other frameworks and programming languages I have seen in the past that are short lived niche skills:
  • COBAL - huge push for Y2K then that was it...
  • Vignette - still out there and you can make a good income doing this. But you spend a lot of time learning Vignette so you can write a few additions to it.

  • How will it help you? If you want to stay in the Curam world, it might not be a bad choice. Here are the good things:

  • There are applications being built with this now (this means maintainance in the future)
  • The government is not going away so there will always be work
  • Being a niche market you could be well compensated if not many people learn it
  • It is Java
  • If you know it, compensation is good.

  • Here are some of the negative things I have run into:

  • You will need training to use it and training is expensive
  • It is not easy to learn
  • Being a big framework, most of the work is done for you. That is good but less coding for you. Most of your time will be trying to decide how you are going to squeeze what you want out of Curam and wither or not Curam can do what you want. Or how much of Curam will you have to tweek and customize to get what you want.
  • There could be a short time when Curam is needed during construction phases. Then during maintainance phases the need for developers may drastically drop.
  • Not a lot of jobs out there. When you want a change you will probably have to move. But your compensation will probably be good. But for how long, nobody knows.
  • Knowing it will not help you get another job.

    Hi All !!!

You guys are missing a lot, if you do not accept the offer from Cram. It has been creating a big wave in Social Enterprise Management.

The Cram Social Enterprise Management solution revolutionizes services delivery across human services, labor, health, social security, and military and veterans organizations around the globe. A comprehensive commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) solution designed specifically for the unique and complex business processes inherent within social enterprises, Cram provides integrated solutions.

I am not any marketing person to Cram. Query my name "Om Naidu" (in double quote), you will come to know that I am just a third party solution provider in SCM tools. But, I know how quickly Cram is penetrating all state and federal government sectors in USA.

There is virtually no known competitor to Cram as of today.

If you want to be an architect, just writing if => else if => else in java code will not make you an architect. You need to know SOA and MDA principles and that is exactly what you will do in Cram.

Want it take it, or else leave it

    Thanks,

    Om Naidu

    Radhika,

Work culture here in CURAM, USA, is not influenced by CURAM Software Inc, Ireland, but by US standards. So it is cool. I am sorry, I do not know how is it in Bangalore. I am day-in-day-out working with CURAM but not as a developer, instead as a Configuration Architect. I wish you could learn and teach me too to do development as an hobby :-). You know, if you reach higher levels, you fundamentals go for a toss. I am basically a Configuration Management Specilist. Visit www.omega-international.us to know more about CM.

    Thanks,

    Om Naidu

OK so this is an old thread but I am interested in the current perception of Curam skills out there.

Where is most of the Curam work for a developer at customer sites (rather than for the actual company) ? India ? USA ? Australia ? New Zealand ? Europe ?

I'd be very interested to see what people think of this - currently working as a software engineer with Curam (last 5 years) and keen to see what options are out there...

I think that the upgrade cycles mean alot more config and alot less dev for alot of places ? Is this correct ?

"You know, if you reach higher levels, you fundamentals go for a toss. I am basically a Configuration Management Specilist."

I worry that all this config stuff also leads to a drop off in core developer skills (Java).
