Is the SQLServer at that IP address set up to accept TCP/IP connections on that port?

Is the database really a SQL Server 2000, and not SQL Server 2005?

I've had some problems connecting to SQL Server 2005 with SQL Server 2000 drivers which threw the exact same error.

Can you omit the port? It will then use the default port.
