I replied to one post yesterday and today I see that the whole thread is gone. I was wondering what could be the reason for that. I would like to know if I broke any rule which prompted this action.

While I wouldn't mind deleting/modifying posts for detoxification, deleting the whole didn't seem necessary in this case, unless I am missing something.

Up to my post, that thread had good a amount of technical content that gave two different view points on a concept. I don't know what happened after that because I logged off for the night. Can anybody fill me in?

The next post reports that it is a real question taken from the exam; as per JavaRanch policy, the thread was therefore removed, at least pending investigation.

ok, thanks. I didn't know that.

Would it be possible to just change the question and let the thread live?

I took a look at the thread in question, and the thing is, I have a hard time thinking of a way to change the question is a way that allows the subsequent discussion to be meaningful. If I change the original question enough to be "safe", your comments don't make a lot of sense anymore. And I don't want to change everyone's comments based on what I imagine each person would have said, if given a different question. I'm not seeing a good solution here; I think the best we can do is probably leave this question alone, and move on. Sorry...

Hi All,

I just have a suggestion: before deleting a thread is it possible to inform all the people who involved in the thread why thread is gettig deleted? So that the people will know and they do not do same mistake again. I am not sure if this is possible but it just a suggestion.

Thanks

This would be very problematic to do, as
  • Not all people provide some way for us to contact them
  • We don't have any automated way of identifying every user who participated in a topic
  • It is impossible to identify every user who viewed the topic
  • We don't have any way of sending a message to a small number of users (except for going to each user's profile, and then sending either an email or a PM (assuming they accept emails or PMs)).
  • We are all volunteers here, so the time taken to do this is time that could be better spent elsewhere
  • Having said all that, it is not inconceivable that we may look at doing something in the future to help people understand why their posts were deleted / modified. But again - this depends on a volunteer doing some work towards it.

    Regards, Andrew

Ernest, you're being too hasty. It certainly would be possible, if somebody were willing to pay me boatloads of money. I could quit my job, and spend 40 hours a week doing nothing but notifying people. i'd be HAPPY to do it.

I'm willing to bet you would, too.

But until those boats pull up to my house (well, you'd have to send fleets of trucks to my house since it's land-locked), i need to keep my day job, and so don't have time to notify people.

Well, I wouldn't - it just would be too boring.

I possibly would be willing to patch UBB to do it automatically, if I were paid to do it (and wouldn't already have a job).

See, that'd be the beauty. you'd get your $1meg salary, spend a little time patching the UBB code, and then get paid for letting it do it automatically, while having time to persue other, more fun endeavors.
