Please don't simply write "jdbc" as the title of your thread: please look at this FAQ. Please provide more details, eg what driver you are using and how you call it, the message SQL state and vendor code on the Exception, etc.
Then we shall be better able to help

Do you have an Oracle instance running on your local machine? Does it have a service called "oracle9i"? Can you connect to this via sqlplus: scott/tiger@oracle9i ?
