Hi there,

I am currently working as a software engineer and I am pretty good at it. I work as a backend Java developer and also some amount of tools development using JSP/JSTL/Spring/AJAX. I compare myself to the senior software engineers here and I feel I am better than them.

I have about 5 years of industry experience and a Master's degree. I have brought up this topic with my manager and though they gave me a raise, the title is still elusive, which makes me think it's time to look for another job.

How difficult do you guys think it is getting a higher title in a new job? Any tips on how to prepare for these interviews? What are the managers looking for?
Thanks !
-Sania

stupid idea. If you don't like the company or the work, that's reason to try and get another job.
Don't get another job just because the businesscards look more impressive.

Jeroen, please adhere to the Be Nice rule that is in effect here at JavaRanch. Calling ideas stupid goes very much against that.

I don't mind the idea being called stupid, that's his opinion. I beg to differ though that titles don't matter. How else can you climb the corporate ladder? It's very obvious, especially if you are planning to apply to business schools down the road. I am sure if you say you are manager, you are much more likely to get an admit than if you say you are a SW Engineer.

not really.
They've now inflated job titles here to ridiculous levels.
The toilet cleaner is now a "sanitation and hygiene manager", telephone operators are "communications management assistants", and things like that.

Maybe you should call yourself a "software production systems manager" (in other words, someone who manages a PC to create software, in other words a programmer).

you should definitely ask for 'senior' to be added to your designation as u have 5 yrs of experience, the most common designation hierarcy in a sw company is SE->SSE->TL ,
if you dont ask for SSE now ,it will take you longer time to be a TL and in future you will see lesser qualified people as your TL/PL/PM etc
market is good enough and this is the right time to negotiate.dont lose this opportunity
