I think that ant helps to complie the files although you don't have to use ant. I have problems to set up ant and envronmental variables on Windows 2000, too. I am working on that.

Even though every thing is ok i keep getting the error message Set J2EE home before running the script.
What's your problem

Preety, I have the same combinations as you do: Oracle, Windows 2000 and J2EE.
I downloaded the J2EE Tutorial which uses ant to help to compile and the Developer's Guide in the J2EE docs which does not use ant. Both are almost same. Right now I try to stay away with the ant and work on Developer's Guide. I am trying to work on converter example in Getting Started. The problem is that I can not compile it using userconf.bat. Hopeful you have some ideas. By the way, I have set envrionmental variables, but I am not sure what I did is right.
Good luck.

I have set the userconf.bat and variables. Search path in this forum and take a look at the info you need. I set those in my home computer and can not remember exactly. I am not sure about the driver butmy friend told me we can doload from Oracle if you don't have one.
Good Luck.
