Nope. You don't need any database stuff at all.
However, CMP EJBs will have some form of persistence supplied by the container, and IT is likely to use JDBC, though out of sight.
For BMP beans, how you handle persistence is up to you, but JDBC is a solution that's simple and straightforward.
