I have Inprise application server come along with Jbuilder4, but I can't startup, the message shows
"Sun's J2EE Reference Implementation found in d:\jdk1.3.
BAS requires J2SE, not J2EE." (d:\jdk1.3 is my directoy where JDK EE located)
and meanwhile, not sure whether is due to IAS can't startup, my Jbuilder4 also can't startup.
Pls help...Thanks.

I'm impressed. You seem to be getting an error message that actually says EXACTLY what's wrong for a non-obvious error!
You have 2 java environments. One is the "client" one (jdk or J2SE) the other is the J2EE one. In the case of an appserver, this is generally installed integrated into the appserver. The "S" in J2SE means "Standard", not "Server", BTW. Normally you'd unpack the J2SE into D:
\jdk1.3. Instead it looks like you unpacked a copy of J2EE there. Servers use both, but you wouldn't normally keep them both in the same directory.

it's ok after I re-installed JDK SE and JDK EE into diff. directory.
