Start by reading Richard Monson-Haefel's "Java Message Service" . It's a good explanation and tutorial. You'll need to download a JMS provider to get started -- pointers to where to get some are in the book.

Try using Open JMS.
It is very easy to install. If you face any problems with using it, the openJMS forum is very useful and replies are posted very fast(to solve your problems).
JMS is the way to go for the asynchronous messaging work of the system. It gives a great new dimension for the system.
