information about unfulfilled promise of EJB component market

as far as I know the in 1999 often mentioned ejb component market never became reality.
Was it pure marketing hype? I never really understood how that could be put into practice because for example Entity beans are strongly coupled with the existing business of the company. Additionally, in practice you will often have to take into account existing database structures. Or am I missing something?
O.k. you may model some aspects of your business and might reuse those inside of the company. But this is not, what most people understand when they hear "component" in my view.
You know some articles who are discussing EJB component market?
A google search resulted in 10 articles, all seems to be from 1999.
I need some material for a realistic standpoint about that in some sort of presentation.
