Difference between Application and Web Server  RSS feed

Can any one please tell me....What is the difference between an application server and a web server? Thanks in advance

Yes, I can try...
A webserver is a common name for a HTTP Server.
Basically, that's a server able to understand HTTP/HTTPS requests
For example, Apache is a webServer
An application server is much more elaborate.
It's a strange beast containing :
- an EJB container (for EJB)
- a Web Container (for JSP)
and responding to Corba, RMI, IIOP requests
For example, Sybase EAServer, IBM WebSphere and BEA WebLogic are Application servers.

Most of the time, Application servers work with or contain an WebServer(HTTP)

As per Sun's J2EE certification requirement, Application Servers must have an embedded Web Server.
