I recently had some doubt about how other people go around and negotiate the salary. You have done superb in your interveiws and now the final bell comes HR asks for expected salary and then settles for some thing less. How can we negotiate with the HR in this case. Any personal experiences which you want to share will be definitely helpful.
I don't know but its the most difficult part I suppose. I've had different experiences so far.
The companies that I've worked for gave me good offers as per my aspirations. So I did not have to negotiate. Also he fact that they did not negotiate made me inclined to join them.
There were few like IFlex which did not budge at all and I had to say thank you to them.
I don't like negotiate. I am not good at it. So when I have done very well in the interviews, I quote a bit higher price that I know I will not get in most cases. (Once I was surprised that I got that and felt like a fool). But at the same time I usually have a walkaway price in my mind which if I do not get I will not consider. But if the company is just very good, work is great and I have decided that I want to join then I may even relax the salary part a little bit. It all depends really.
You can say like you have other offers that are paying you x amount or that you have an impending salary review in your current company.Some of the HRs are just too clever and they will always have a counter argument ready. But in the end if they want you they'll agree to your demands as long as they are rational.

Thanks a lot to both of you both Sumit and Abhijit. I will follow your suggestions accordingly. In my previous 2 organisations also the consultancy fixed everything, even the HR didnt discuss this with me. Is that the right thing. What if the company doesnt discuss salary at all? Recently it happened with me for Cisco, Manhattan, Sonata. All these companies never asked me the salary. They all gave offer letter depending upon what I told to the consultancy. Any further inputs in this regard.
If this is so, then have you negotiated with your Consultancy.
Because if you are joining a company directly, then HR may ask you about salary nego. elseother wise if you are coming from a consultancy then you have to negotiate with your Consultancy, HR people never negotiate in this sort of matters.
So for next time, if you are going thourgh any consultancy, then discuss salary issued before preceeding to interview with HR.

Some companies do not discuss with you about the salary, they will give you offer letter depending on your profile, role and market standards. Many times they will make you happy about salary. Some times if the company can meet your expected salary what you told during HR interview or to consultant, then they will give you offer without negotiating. So becareful when they do ask your expected salary. Negotiations will happen only when your expected salary is more then what a company can offer.
