Hi all,

It looks like a whole topic about H1B hike has been simply erased. Of course such topics may sometimes drift to overheat because matter itself may lead to excessive comments, but in general discussion remains fair most of the time. While erasing abusive comments is OK for me along with a warning for author, erasing the whole topic as retailation is excessive. When within an assembly one person becomes so agressive it deserves a fine, you don't give a fine to the whole assembly but only to the involved person.

What is in clear Javaranch policy when abusive comments occur by regards to the whole topic ?

Best regards.

The thread wasn't really a discussion.
The original post was a plea for Americans to ask their representatives (complete with sample letter) to oppose a particular piece of legislation favored by George Bush.

Yes, I am perfectly aware of the biased start about purely political H1B hike, but it allowed the launch of a (fair I hope) discussion about H1B purposes which seemed interesting, so it should logicaly have been allowed to continue in this case.

What is more, this doesn't answer to my plea about Javaranch policy about topics which drift badly at one moment, so bad it looks like whole topics seem to have been erased.
Personnaly I believe abusive comments should be censored, warning to involved contributor made, but whole topics should NEVER be erased for such reason.

Best regards.

There is no policy to arbitrarily remove topics that have drifted badly. When a topic drifts some place unpleasant, the responses that break our "Be Nice" policy tend to get trashed. The topic itself will not normally go the same way purely because of some bad responses. That is unless a Bartender or Sheriff decides the topic itself is the problem, and is liable to provoke responses that are not nice. This is fairly subjective process, but Ben has already mentioned why the topic itself was removed.

The official JavaRanch list of rules:

    1) be nice

    The official JavaRanch naming policy:

      http://www.javaranch.com/name.jsp

The official JavaRanch policy on all other things:

        1) I like pie

I am grateful to all of the staff for all of their hard work so that JavaRanch is such a lovely place for me to hang out. If it turns out to be a nice place for others to hang out, that's nice too.

Oh yeah, a complaint .... well, let's see, I suppose I could follow your suggestions, but that sounds like a lot of work. Hmmmm ..... lots of work .... or let staff delete whole threads willy nilly .... hmmmmm .... if the staff does it their own way, I can spend more time eating pie ... there are lots more threads that didn't get deleted .... and some of those threads are just the same old rehash over and over and over .... then somebody gets upset and icky .... then there's all those people compaining "why did you delete my post and not the other guy's post? My post was only 2% more evil than that post and I demand bla bla bla ...." "you have to bla bla bla bla" "If you don't do as I say I'm gonna tell my mommy bla bla bla" "I hate you. I hate your sister. I hate broccoli. I hate bla bla bla ...."

Pie is good. I like pie.

I think if a staffer deleted the whole thread, it was probably the right thing to do. I like the staff. They make me look cool.

Of course, sometimes the thread is deleted by the person that started the thread. And then the staff gets blamed. Or me.

But I still eat pie. So everything is okay.

I'm glad we had this chat and got everything worked out.

Paul,

I always wondered about this... Does "I like pie" only apply to desserts? Or are "Chicken Pot Pie", "Steak and Kidney Pie", etc. in the category?

Sorry Henry, but meat pies don't seem to apply to the "I like pie" rule.

I have taken great delight a few times in the past by starting a conversation along the lines of "so, I went shopping yesterday, and bought half a dozen pies" - at this point Paul's eyes light up - then I continue "I got some Steak & Onion, and Steak & Mushroom, and Steak & Cheese ...". Of course, by this time Paul's face is tragic.

Rather cruel of me I know

Best regards, Andrew

Ooohhhh, but not for me.

My maternal grandmother was a lousy cook by every definition of the word, following the French-Canadian custom of cooking or boiling everything until any resemblance to food was long past. But her meat pies were simply fabulous!

Unfotunately, the recipe was never handed down...

Eric,
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner on this.

When I removed that topic, I intended to figure out a way to put it back after removing the provocative parts. Then, life got in the way and, by the time I had a chance to address it, you had already started a (much better IMO) topic in the same forum so I left it at that.
