Reading Polish characters from database

I'm attempting to read some Polish characters from my database, but somewhere along the line the encoding gets lost.
Once I've stored the information in a String I'm supposed to change the encoding using
byte b[] = text.getBytes("UTF-8");
this should give me the correctly encoded data but since I'm using SilverStream I need to use a setText(String) method to display the text. As soon as I do this by converting my byte array to a String I lose the encoding. Does anyone know what I can do to solve this?
Thanks
Richard Sweeney
