July, 25 2006 I am a one year old experience guy, working in one of the top most ITeS Company of India. Moving from the academic world to the head challenging corporate world, there is a lot of change in my thinking. Let me share my one year experience with you.

Almost No one is willing to bet on New Bie:-
Being in the service company neither the Client nor your own PM/PL is willing to give you an assignment, if you are a Fresher. This is because the clients(and some times your manager) only wants experience people in there project.

Learning curve is slow :-
Sitting idle for at least 6 hrs out off 9 hours a day, still motivating my self every other day and learning some thing. There are many new bies like me who are not yet assigned to a full life cycle Project. And this is not only happing in my company ,but in all other service companies like TCS, Infy, Wipro, IBM, Accenture because they always need a pool of resources in there hand.
So what I am doing is exploring my self to various technologies and watching the industry trends (one of the things that excites me a lot).

Every one is throwing ball in others court:-
Few people are willing to work, but every one is ready to take the credit of the work done. If some issues are there then, management people are very smartly putting the ball in other court. The issue which are supposed to take hardly one or two days, are taking one to two weeks.

Never forget to show off your effort to your Boss:-
Doing your work and putting up deliverables on time is not enough these days, every one is able to do it. Letting the boss know your effort is what will be counted at the time of Promotions. So you have to show up your efforts also.

**********What all u Ranchers think about it.

Bingo!!!
True for most of the companies but there are few companies (Again i would say it depends on which project you are working for...as work culture differs from One project to another..)where these kind of issues are relatively less prominant.

Bottom Line is You should be Visible(In a Positive Sense )) in a Team either you can achive this by Showing your Technical Skills & Domain Knowledge Expertise....Basically it depends on how you get involved with Team.

ya its true.In most of service companies frshers dont have much value.Even in product companies if u get into wrong product that does not have good work then u cant change unless u complete 1 year.My most of the time also spends in the learning same j2ee stuff in 1st year.I think after 2+ situation will change.
But not all companies will be like these U have to find the right place that suits u.and thats the resason I surf this forum.

i suggest always to join startup or small company for the newbies.

learning rate is high....you will get hands on experience to handle the project....there will be personal attention....and the developement work

only drawback is, work load.....but you have to do it for your career...there is no short cut

Having said that it also helps to have a big brand name on your resume at the start of your career. Typically it has advantages in short-listing of your resume and in salary negotiations. There is alwaya a feel-good factor associated with a big brand.

Add to the thread ....

ADA (Aeronautical Development Agency), NAL (National Aeronautics Limited) etc... are good for starters on contract job. It has lot of scope to learn new things and technologies.

First year .... i spent learning lot of new things. But on second year, when i joined one of the top IT company in India, i was put into do reverse engineering. I was paid so high to do documentation. That demotivated me. Then i did my SCJP certification and then i got shifted to one of the development project in Java (which was very new at that time). Afterwards, i was continuosly on java development project till now.

When u r free, learn technology, business domian etc. That helps you when you are on the assignment.

Hey you can talk to your PM/Contact Person about what things he has planned for you..if you ask this in correct context with proper language i think...things would start rolling (may be very slowly)however at least it will start...If you show some signs of active participation i guess you will not face a problem as sitting idle for 1 yr. or so....(Unless & Untill future of current project is uncertain )

Well You can think of Brand name companies like TCS,Wipro,Infy etc....as an example where there is a less chance of "lack of Appreciation for your work" (again it depends...ultimately we are human beings....)

Are TCS, Infy, wipro still considered as "brands" ? I am not sure how much they would be useful. everybody knows what goes on inside these companies. By brand name I mean companies like Veritas,Oracle,Sun, Adobe, BEA, MS, Google, BMC and so on ...

I talked to my PM several times, i always get the same replies, projects are comming.

Do self study. And if a call to a project comes then a senior person is send for that Project. Though i am doing the work on my part by preparing for SCWCD or helping out other if they have any problem.

Let me know what are the consequences, if i break my bond with my company

JFYI, I haven't read the whole post.

But alfred, one can't actually decide his/her first company. Company decides the candidate.

In the situation where you can work for nothing, you just need a job, you will not leave any offer whether it is testing or maintainence or support or development, deciding company is something close to impossible.

Ya..exactly company decides the Candidate.

But you can always start your search with smaller companies(instead of Brand-name companies), which dont advertise abt their requirement. USe your friend network to find such firms, visit them personally to drop hard copy of resume and have look at their work location and talk to employees working there.

Its tough. I know. But I did the same way and landed in a small company - and I am happy with my decision. I had full opportunity of working on live project, learning tools and tech and gaining exp in Development. As a person, u get recognition in small firms - ofcourse u need to put in lots of efforts to build your career - also Pay Scale wont match up with Branded companies.

After two years of heavy dev work - I was easily able to switch to Bigger Company with good pay and perks - jus because I had exposure to lot of things in smaller company before.

Its individual decision to join for good Career or good Pay nad Brand. It affects in long Run...what say??

First company... either you got through in campus, in this case, you are not allowed for other companies... and actually you don't care about anything... that's more than enough result of BE or BTech...

And if you are not lucky then you just want job, what ever it is, where ever it is...

So, I can bet on it that people can't choose their first company (exceptions are always occur )

The situation is some year back not now. Freshers have lot of options now and they can decide their company. May the no of options are less for them compare to experienced but they do have options.
