It took a turn to become a political thread, as far as I can tell. I don't think it had anything to do with what you did. :sigh:

I'm not trying to upset anyone, but "no politics" isn't a difficult request to follow. Please feel free to repost and we can try again.

But that post was not being political...

It was the photo of a Railway's minister of India playing HOLI...

A colourfull festival in India.... I don't think so it was political and was good to remove.... DOes showing the snaps of Festival is political in your terms... This is not fair

You explain me David why did you think that it was political...

Politicians are, by definition, political.
Non political discussion that have come to include politicians have become discussions about politics.
If it doesn't discuss politics, it begins to discuss their policies. Oops, that's politics.
Or maybe decisions in office. Politics.

Do you have a picture of a cricketer celebrating?

Well that means If I would have been shown a cricket Celebrity then you wouldn't delete that thread...

Anyways then in that case too you did't need to delete the whole thread... You may edit that content.. I mean you can delete that photo...

But deleting a thread of Famous Festival in India is not at all right....

Afterall we all are sharing our preprations towards Holi....

Please justify this David.??

Your first post in the thread (Ankur) was completely nonpolitical. Great. The second post in the thread was from another poster, a picture showing a prominent politician celebrating Holi. I think that was also acceptable., as the content was still not really about politics. But then you, Ankur, made a third post in which you chose to ignore Holi entirely and instead praise the politician. That's where things became unambiguously political. If you want to celebrate Holi, great - but please leave politics out of it. We don't need the unending arguments.

Thanks Jim, that was my point. If it had been one post I would have removed it and moved on. Instead it was your own thread in reply that moved more towards the political conversation so I thought if it was important you would repost the thread.

If it was important, you would have reposted the thread.

Ok I agreed,

Now cann't we delete third post and start it again... So that we can place our emotions towards HOLI.

I hope it wouldn't hurt anyone.... And this demand can be acceptable.

We *could* probably do that.

There are two reasons why we don't necessarily do it:

- this still is mainly a Java site, the MD forum just being for relaxation - so we'd rather not put that much effor into keeping it nice; and

- if it was meaningless, it doesn't hurt much to delete it, if it wasn't, it doesn't belong into MD at all.

So I ask for your understanding that we very much would prefer you to put the effort into reposting it and keeping it free from politics. Thanks - and have fun!

Anyways then in that case too you did't need to delete the whole thread... You may edit that content.. I mean you can delete that photo...

Which is easier:

1) a moderator goes through every post in a thread, deleting every individual post that we don't want. Then, they go through the remaining posts, and delete out the objectional part, but leaving the parts that are ok. Then, they go through the posts to 'clean up' the references to the parts of other posts that are now gone. THEN they deal with 14 people saying "what happened to MY post?" "Why did you edit what I wrote?" "What gives you the right to change what I said?"

2) The thread gets deleted. The original poster re-creates the thread, if they feel like it.

If your post is "meaningless drivel", then why should you care if it is deleted?

If you do care about whether it was deleted, it sounds like it is important and should, therefore, be deleted.

Sometimes people post stuff that has meaning, but nobody cares all that much about it. They visit about it a little and all is smooth.

And then there are posts where people do care and they start to get their panties in a bunch. The best/easiest thing to do is just remove the whole thread and move on with our lives. Surely there are gobs more fun things to talk about - one thread out of a few hundred (on the whole site) is no big deal.

If you want your threads to stick around, everybody has to play nice nice. Everybody.

Hello everybody,

Can we have some silence here please and please everybody chill out

I respect both, the festival Holi and Java Ranch.

Dear Ankur, this is a technical forum and meant to discuss issues regarding technical topics. I dont want to hurt your sentiments but if you have something to say about HOLI and let people in the world know then you can pour your heart out in social community forums or blogs and paste a link in your signature.

I am just trying to say that yes HOLI is great for us but expressing it somewhere which does not actually signify its importance is something which can be done elsewhere where people would appreciate it.

Don't spoil your day just because the thread was deleted. Celebrate the festival and enjoy it . Wish you a very Happy Holi.

Starting a thread about a holiday here is perfectly OK, but politics is not. That's what the problem was.
