Why do we require both apache web server & bea application server ? Any particular benefits we get out of using both of them ?

We're not required to use both. WebLogic could easily serve html pages and other static content as well. At least some benefits from using Apache as a front are that you can scale the whole system more efficiently (i.e. you can scale the web servers without adding application servers) and you get a more robust/tested web server for doing the dirty work.

Also remember that if you put Apache in front of Weblogic you can also use other technologies like Perl in your website.
