Hello,

I just spent a few days at JavaOne. Everytime I sat down next to someone using J2EE, I would ask the same question, "When does one use EJBs?" Sometimes others would join in and for every reason one person came up with (mostly extensibility or security), another would say that they had those requirements and are doing fine without EJBs. About the only person who gave a sure answer said he would use them if he needed caching.

Do you ever get to a point where you say, we really need EJBs to solve this problem? If so, what is the defining point?

There is always another way of fulfilling a requirement. Unless the requirement is that you use EJBs

EJBs provide a lot of build in security and transaction support. If EJBs give you that for free, why would you want to write it yourself.

Another thing to consider is whether you are talking about session beans or entity beans. Many people use session beans but not entity beans.
