hello writers,

Just a few days before a well earned holiday, I am trying to look up a good book about the whole j2ee lifecycle. Does this book deliver that ? I mean does it start with requirments gathering, functional design, technical design, design patterns, code, packaging, deployment, maintenance and customer satisfaction. Or does it describe the j2ee lifecycle, with jsp/servlets, connector architecture, jms and other j2ee techniques ?

Thanks,
friso

Wow, that's a lot to read up on in a week or two.

I would suggest getting a couple of books, each on the individual APIs that make up J2EE. I myself prefer OReilly as they have very good books on the different J2EE APIs.

Like you listed, they have books on Servlets, JSP/JSTL, EJB, JMS and many other J2EE areas. If you don't need the book right away, try Bookpool for the best discount.

You are talking about some hundreds of pages (thousands maybe) of specs where these are described. I don't think there exist one book to cover all of these in depth. Every point you mention may be in fact a book by itself (and not only one if you need to know everything :-). I suggest you start looking for a book on a specific topic and the level you need. One by one you will find more references.

Hi Frisco,

"J2EE: The Big Picture" is for anyone who is not currently doing J2EE development. It doesn't talk about how to *do* J2EE. It starts way back at the beginning: what's a container? why would you need one? what does it mean to have open standards? Then it progresses through high level explanations of EJBs and other technologies, plus Web services, security, transactions, resource management, architecture and qualities of service. There's also an appendix with an overview of object orientation, Java (J2SE), and a buzzword glossary.

"J2EE: The Big PIcture" isn't what you're looking for, but if you work with managers, writers, QAers, salespeople, marketing folks, etc. who don't have a grasp of "the big picture," it's a good book for them.

Thanks for the question,

Solveig

hi nick,

no i wasn't really looking for any preparation on any certification subject. If your memory is ok you should know I am not a certification animal. However i was looking for some sort of table of contents. And I was trying to find out what the authors see as being the big picture.

kind regards,
friso

Hi Friso,

From your original description of what you're looking for, it still doesn't sound like The Big Picture is what you want. However, if you'd like to look at the TOC, here it is.
