If I had to make up an answer that drew any distinction, I might say that "business" refers to things that model the way the business works over long term or permanent processes, and "application" refers to things that help users accomplish discrete tasks. Wow, that's a load of bull, isn't it?

People talk about this kind of thing to determine where in the architecture certain kinds of code should go. There are many ways to carve an design into layers like application or business. I captured a few pictures HERE. Hope that helps.
