Best city for IT pros in India ?

Hi,

Which one according to you is the best place for IT pros to be in India ?
I have listed out a couple alsong with pros and cons.
Please feel free to add....

Bangalore
Pros-Many,many IT companies.
Cons-Expensive,congested.

Chennai
Pros-Cheap
Cons-Not many IT companies,poor culture - hostility against non-tamils.

Hyderabad
Pros-Quite a few IT companies,cheap
Cons-not sure ?

Pune
Pros-Many IT companies.
Cons-Expensive.

Noida/Delhi/Gurgaon (NCR)
Pros-Many IT companies
Cons-Unsafe compared to south India,Maharastra

Chandigarh
Pros-Great city,not very expensive
Cons-Not many IT companies.

Calcutta
Pros- Cheap
Cons-Congested,Not many IT companies.

Mumbai
Pros - ?
Cons-Not many IT companies,congested,expensive....

Advantages that Mumbai has are, it is a true cosmopolitan city. You will have people from all states and all culture. It is also financial and media (and underworld) capital of India.

Disadvantages that Mumbai has are, it is always on target of terrorist. Traveling by train is panic. Cost of living is very high. In some areas pollution and traffic jam is very high.

I dont understand how you got this impression...Your view is wrong....Many of my other state friends are at home in Chennai.....

some more pros of Chennai...Good Infrastructure,Good manpower availability due to reputed engineering colleges in the vicinity

tsk tsk... not at all. In fact I some times feel alienated in my own city. There are only 3 tamils in my project. Everyone just gets along fine.

I too found Chennai better than many cities.Weather in Bangalore is good but city is highly expensive,fit for NRIs and rich businessmen.Pune,once cultural capital of Maharashtra has been reduced to ordinary city full of potholes and other infrastructure problems.
Recently one survey put Chennai and Kolkata at top.Kolkata is far east!!!.I doubt how many are willing to relocate there.
Other emerging IT towns are Hubli/Dharwad/Coimbtore/Vijaywada/Visakhapattanam/Cochin

Delhi/Noida/Gurgaon is pretty good option . Cost of living is good compared to Bangalore . Food is pretty cheap . You don't have to pay 10-12 month advance for renting an apartment . It has a good cosmopolition nature and the city is growing real fast . City is well connected to other parts of country . Traffic situatiuon is ok . lot of places to hang around in weekend . Jobs options are also good ( but not as good as Bangalore ).

Cons - It's unsafe and rude city .

Yes I also feel that Chennai is best city for you if you are Tamil. This is my personal opinion based on my personal experience. As far as opportunities and willingness to accept people from other states are concerned I think Pune is the best. If you only consider willingness to accept people from other states, then Mumbai rules. And Mumbai do have decent number of IT companies.. earlier IT companies in Mumbai were concentrated in Seepz.. Andheri (East). .but now they are all over the city.. New Bombay has quite a few good companies...
Weather / Safty / Number of opportunities / Cost of Living / cultural openness makes Pune the best city IMO. Agreed the infrastructure is somewhat challenged.. but thats true in most of the cities in India.

But this is a very personal question. What is best for me may not be best for you and vice versa.. :-)

Personal bias towards Chennai - my hometown. Nice city for IT when I used to work (I still remember working in TIDEL park when it was just opened up for occupancy). I have not lived / worked in any other cities that were mentioned - so, I dont think I have the right to comment.

True, Mumbai is the best city for me to settle down because I can reach my hometown in just 3hrs and I can go my hometown every weekends.

Guys i think you forget Gandhinagar in Gujarat the capital of gujarat and sister city of Ahmedabad.

Gandhinagar is going to be the fastest emerging IT marget in near future with 3 SEZ for IT and 2 IT Parks.

Gandhinagar is the greenest capital in world is designed as such traffic of 50 lakhs to 1 crore people can live and commute. where as current population is not even 3-4 lakhs.

The only Cons for Gandhinagar is that it does not have alchol permission as in rest of gujarat.

But is available unofficially.

TCS is expanding is existing capacity to 2000 from 800 and cybage is expected to start its working in 1st week november with initial capacity of around 400-800.
Other big IT giants are also eyeing it.

So do consider it , who knows withing 3-4 months you might be here in Gujarat !!!

Mumbai is the highest costliest city in india , then delhi,blore almost same second rank in terms of cost living.
Hyderabad , calcutta cheap.

...as far as traffic rules are concerned i guess bangalore will be judged worst among the cities in the discusion and in comparison hyd should not be considered bad..also the cost of living is much cheaper, great places to hang out..makes hyderabad one of cities for IT pros to settle down..

Coming to topic, each city has its own pros and cons. If one's content with reasonable pay, Hyderabad is the best. If you are oriented towards money then you need to be in Bangalore. If you would like to be in a place with a northie flavour, Pune would be a good option.

Chennai and Kolkata have a limited appeal. Other than Tamils and Bengalis respectively , no one seems to prefer those places.

This question is totally dependant on the company for which you work.
For example, Mumbai is best for TCS employees. Becasue TCS is having the highest number or offices only in Mumbai.
It is true that there or not so many IT firms in Mumbai as in Banglore.
But it depends on your choice.

Apart from Delhi/Gurgaon/Noida in north india,Panchkula(near chandigarh,delhi) will emerge as IT king of all cities in time to come as projected by govt.as it is living a dream of sabeer bhatia's dream project.
only problem with delhi/ncr is securtiy else its the best cities to live.
i am in mumbai and trying my best to leave now.
traffic jams are killing and deepressing as the cost of living.
dont talk about the filth around the city as it is unexplainable during the rains.

The comfort in cities are relative to person . Bangalore I found is equally conservative and non friendly to Hindi as Chennai is to non-Tamils. In terms of infrastructure , Bangalore is the worst , roads are equally bad in Pune and to some extent in Chennai . I would rate Hyderabad best in terms of basic infrastructure , but politically it's very volatile .Delhi and Kolkata are slightly better , but in terms of traffic all worst , Pune might be slightly better . Delhi , Noida and Gurgaon are good but socially volatile . Pune is socially the best place . Bangalore is somewhat in middle but these days localites in Bangalore have turned anti-non Kannadigas . The future is in Pune I think , and roads are coming-up at a fast pace . This city is going to be wi-fi enabled 100% by 2007 end.

Well I never been to these places. But all crime related shows on Indian News channel are having many stories of those places � I also have same feeling, which can be wrong.

I am from Mumbai but ya I will avoid the temptation of saying Mumbai is the best

from sheer work point of view , it is a best place to work for people from financial domain.

There are a reasonable number of IT companies though

Weather --- Not good
Safety-- Yes much better than Delhi and adjoining areas.
Leave aside terrorist activities, common people including women can move in the city at even 12 Pm without fear.
Transport-- Very good


Pune is the place that rocks

Lots of big brands.Pune has IT companies not only in terms of numbers but also their brand.

Weather and Safety-- Best

Transport--- Hopeless public transport.
Having a bike is essential but once you have a bike ,believe me its real fun in Pune


For people from Western Maharashtra, Pune is the best location
Can travel home on weekends in 4 to 5 hours

last to last saturday there was a saying in TOI that "you must be a lord buddha to be living in mumbai and not getting deprressed or sad or short tempered".due to endless traffic jams in the city ,loud noise of horns ,overcrowded trains .

Mumbai is definitely good if you are an IT professional in the Financial domain.Also the city has good connectivity(a developed public transport system).And yes it is surely a safe place as compared to other metros.

PS:Beware this topic could lead to a new policy prohibiting discussing about the 'best' cities for IT professionals

I found it has poorer infrastructure and costlier compared to Hyderabad.
One thing I liked about Pune is its natual beauty.

Bangalore should be your choice. It does have traffic problems and highest standard of living. There cannot have any comparison compared to number of IT companies and opportunities. Bangalore still contribute as much as 40% in number of software companies and exports.The second top city is far far behind. Best climate and cosmopolitan adds ice on your cake.

One more point is in the paymasters. XXXXXXXXXXXX..The list goes. So if you are on par with the best of a techie (they dont need average guys), then come to Bangalore
